Module 1 : Digital Media in Visual Arts

Digital media is becoming vert important when it comes to journalism, because it is known that by time individuals are getting more interested in visuals rather then being interested in the article itself. I look at these elements ie. Digital media and Journalism, as married components, because they go hand in hand when it comes to presenting a piece of writing. In my opinion a piece of writing in a newspaper, web article or on television should always have the aspect of visual, this will elicit interest within the public that encounter your piece of writing. Therefore the art of Visual media  compliments the art of language and vice versa.

Assignment one :

Research: Research and investigate a minimum of four industry-standard software used in the creation, editing and post-production process within four different areas (photo manipulation, video editing, etc) of Creative Media. Define the context in which each of the chosen software is used while making reference to its capabilities (technical specifications, file formats, etc) and purposes (design, business, etc).

Using the data collected from your research, design and produce a draft layout for a booklet, with a minimum of eight-pages. You are expected to experiment with various layout and font solutions before finalizing your booklet design. The research report must be designed in Adobe InDesign and exported as both a PDF and packaged InDesign folder. Both the PDF and InDesign package must be uploaded on Schoology.com and to your blog.

During the lessons we started by an introduction to photoshop and started out an image manipulation process.

The intent of this photo is to make the horse in a silhouette and add wings to it.

First we started by uploading the image in photoshop.Secondlly a Channel mixer was added and the image was set in a monochrome tone.

Step 1)

ASSIGNMENT 1 :

Assignment one involves a design of a magazine like booklet with the information gathered about 4 desired editing programs. For this design to take place initially, a sketch was done on an a4 paper.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_167e.jpg

During the second step of the process I opened a new document in InDesign and created the beehive element on the page. The idea was to place vector logos in the bigger hive in the middle, the logos are of the programs that are going to be discussed in this mag. Apart from that the adobe and creative cloud logos were induces in order to credit the developer of the editing softwares.

Screen Shot 2016-11-08 at 10.51.49.png

The third step was to place the vector logos.

Screen Shot 2016-11-08 at 00.56.48.png

To highlight the idea of a beehive, a bee was created in Illustrator in order to be placed in the coming pages. First I designed the bee on an A4 paper in hand.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_167f.jpg

After this process I illustrated the bee into a vector in Illustrator.

Screen Shot 2016-11-08 at 00.57.04.png

After creating page 2 and 3 I added some beehive elements, the two vector logos and of coarse.. THE BEE.

Screen Shot 2016-11-08 at 00.59.47.png

A text box was incorporated into the design in order to write information into the magazine.

Screen Shot 2016-11-13 at 15.16.01.png

The image was deleted from the magazine for the reason that it was not aesthetically eye pleasing.

This is the finished pdf product ie. A magazine about 4 editing softwares. digitalmediamagfinsihed2

Assignment for Task2 , LO2: Understand and apply post production tools and techniques using image editing and design software.

Raster Images or Graphics:

A raster image of graphic are digitally produced images that a formed by a grid of pixels which are illuminated in a monochromatic tone or colour values. The raster image contains information that is linked to a grid and for this reason it is also called a bitmap since in a way it consists of coordinates that have particular colour characteristics. When dealing with raster images one has to be careful since when enlarged information can be lost very easily.

Raster images are normally produced by taking or scanning a photo.

Examples:   BMP, TIFF, GIF, AND JPEG FILES.

Vector Images or Graphics:

A Vector image or graphic on the other hand allow more alternative changes. Vector graphics are constructed by formulating mathematical formulas which then are individually coloured block by block. This is normally used for company logos and other brand graphics such as packaging and so on.

Normally vector images are created with programme such as Adobe Illustrator which permits the user to create freely a vector image which can be enlarged easily and also manipulated in other vector graphics or raster graphics.

Examples:  EPS, AI

Two Sources of Raster images which are manipulated and added with vector graphics

raster-image-including-vector-1

raster-image-with-vector-2

Images like the ones above, include raster images combined together with shapes and geometrical vector elements that make the art pieces more artistic. As one can notice in the finished product there are patterns shapes and even sources of typography. An artistic point of view has to be enacted since art pieces like this are very abstract are not seen very often. These final pieces can be be used for several mediums such as magazine covers, music album covers or even simply an image to portray a message.

Vector Elements are not only used in still raster images but they are also used in moving raster image.

Stancenation Showoff: Edition 2016

In the first and ending part of the video above include vector logos that were inserted in the animation. Such vectors are also animated with a distortion effect at the end of the clip. In video vector images a often used since a video usually requires the creators to be credited. Using a vector logo for credit helps the audience associate themselves with the logo so in that way when they encounter another video by the same creator they directly remember the vector graphic (logo).

Khelani Gangster

As seen in the video above along the whole video there is a vector graphic evident. what is interesting about this vector image that is it is creatively animated. To make it more interesting is that the vector images is synced to the audio therefore it makes it a complete audio-visual video.

Two popular animation programs which can animate vector images like the ones seen above, are adobe after effects and targa.

Process: Finished piece 1:

First I sketched out the piece intended to be done.

15555956_1235159053187531_634464829_n.jpg

Then I took several raster images; Original PhotoThe next step was to open the image in photoshop and manipulate it as the sketch suggests.

Screen Shot 2016-12-16 at 23.56.37.pngScreen Shot 2016-12-16 at 23.57.30.pngThen illustrator was opened in order to create a vector of a circles and a triangle in order to create frame for the images.

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 00.14.07.png

An A4 sheet was opened on photosop and the vector images were opened in this she in order to start manipulating it with raster images. The Image (Vatican) was also duplicated in the document.

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 00.19.50.png

By using the Elliptical Marquee tool the circle was selected and with a right clock and inverse selection the outside of the circle was enabled to be erased. the same was done with the image of the pope.

Edinting the photo of the pope.

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 00.44.32.png

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 00.55.31.png

The cross was selected with the quick selection tool on photoshop and duplicated in the final product. same was proceeded with an image I took of bank note.

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 16.18.43.png

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 16.21.25.png

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 01.07.40.png

I duplicated the layer so that I will form a background filled with money bank notes. For this, the layers that include the bank Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 15.42.52.png for background were set behind everything.

Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 01.08.42.png

After haivng everything i wanted to link everything together with same line, so i opened the image in ilustrator in order to form graphics around that lead the same thing.Screen Shot 2016-12-17 at 15.42.52.png

Than I deleted the background iamge and kept only the vector images, and loaded the graphics into the the raster + vector images in photoshop.

Process: Finished piece 2:

After doing a bit of brainstorming about Amsterdam which was the theme for the second piece , I sketched what i intended to do:

sketchamsterdam.jpg

I uploaded the images and selected the areas that I want for the piece. (The areas selected seen in the image underneath this passage. Then I inserted them on an a4 sheet on photoshop.

screen-shot-2016-12-18-at-13-42-12

Screen Shot 2016-12-18 at 14.21.40.png

On adobe illustrator I formulated a circle and then uploaded it on the same a4 sheet on photoshop. (the one above) Along with this circle I continued to duplicate it in order to have enough for the image to be seen through the circles, since the rest of the images where go to be erased.

Screen Shot 2016-12-18 at 03.09.44.png

Apart from that on the illustrator i wrote ‘amsterdam’ in Myriad Pro font two times and with the help of stroke I managed to give a background . Basically the word Amsterdam was written two times with different stroke points and the darker one was used as a background for the other one. Than the vector graphics ‘amsterdam’  was inserted in the a4 sheet along with the other photos. Screen Shot 2016-12-18 at 03.09.33.png

I selected the circles with the Elliptical Marquee tool and then selected inverse and was able to delete the outside of the circles.

Process: Finished piece 3:

15592513_1236613693042067_2085366890_n

As sketched on the illustrator, I illustrated a paper boat, colouring it in blue, red and in yellow.

I also illustrated a cloud with the Ellipse Marquee Tool as sketched in the initial sketch. The last cloud is coloured black for the purpose of being evident in this blog.

Both the clouds and the boats were inserted in the photo that I took.

Panorama islabormla.jpg

After I had put the boats I realised that the finished result would look better if the paper boats had a sort of shadowed reflection attached. Therefore I illustrated a shadow and when opened in photoshop I used the multiply effect for the sea texture to come evident.
