Story Telling and Narrative.

  1. Instagram Photos (x3 each) with short description of your intended visual story

Instagram Photo:

Captured this photo while walking around my home town. I did not know this girl we meet on a bus stop and talked about everything, she told me how much she would like to succeed in the music industry. My thoughts were that she was a very ambitious girl, randomly I took a picture of her looking up, as if she looking up to her dreams. She liked it, from then onwards we became friends.

This photo in my opinion screams out culture. The ice cream itself shows a particular artistic culture with a blurred background of the historical and artistic city of valletta. Apart from that the city depicts the city life with loads of people in the background the feel of the photo is a touristic one. I took this particular photo in this manner because I was feeling like a tourist in my own country, and I wanted to express that.

This is a street photograph I took while I was staying in Rome. Something was fascinating about this woman dressed in a carnival costume yet with a sad expression. I took the photo and afterwards I had a chat with her and asked why is she in that particular square dressed like this. She replied by saying that she is poor and that is the way how she earns money in order to live. Inspired.

Avatar – Setting –

The setting is based on the future with new futuristic gadgets and this is scene from the beginning of the movie with the highly developed trains and props such as ‘mobiles’ the two men had and later on with the gadgets that were present in the labs. The first few scenes are based in the natural world , earth, however it continues to Pandora a planet in space.

Aesthetically the planet looks like a deserted jungle, undeveloped, natural in contrast to the human occupied area that is inhibited by humans. Having a different planet it directly conveys the idea of a fantasy and non existent beings as well as the planet itself.

Mise-en-scene :

World Building:

Pandora/ Future / Jungle – technological buildings

Humans and Avatars / Army Clothing / Military Props such as guns – New highly technological labs and ‘mobiles’, screens and so on

Atmosphere / Mood:

Unearthy Atmosphere very different from the ordinary life / an adventurous mood.

Developing the Story: were it all began.

Initially we were assigned in groups, the group I got to be part of consists of me of coarse, Mauro Karl Sultana, Liam Carter and Karl Azzopardi. We were given a story in order to be inspired from it which is that of ‘The elves and the shoemaker’.

The four of us came up with a different plot the way it inspired us and then we had to choose a final plot that we were going to be working on. We ended up with different plot ideas such as   a story about a teenage pregnancy or a story about a ex footballer who resolved into drugs and so on. Collectively we decided to chose the plot that I had written which is found in the image below.

Originally the story was about a teenager Theo, who had a dream to build a water car engine, however we changed it a bit to be like this.

Story Outline :

The story is of a family that is made up of a father, Joe and a son, Theo. The mother of the family had died when Theo was very young during a car accident while she was in a car with her father , Bob. Joe could not cope with the loss of his wife and worked a lot and even resolved into alcohol. As years gone by their situation had become both financially and emotionally unstable. Theo grew up without a mother, with a wish to restore his mothers car which was still in their garage. Bob his grandfather had left them since his mothers death however after 18 years Bob returns and checks up on Theo. Theo does not remember his grandfather does when he first saw him he treats him like a stranger and tell him to leave from the garage. Bob never tells him that he is his grandfather cause he thinks that Theo might be very angry at him since he was involved in the accident himself. Bob starts to help Theo and Theo accepts his help… One day Bob is taken to the hospital cause of heart pain and had to stay there for surveillance this meant that he had to stop helping Theo.  At this point everything seems to be falling apart for Theo, however after a while he is called from the hospital to pick up Bob. Theo questions why it was him that was called and not someone from Bob’s family, but he is told that he as his only grandson he has to pick him up cause he is the only family member left apart.  They go back to the garage and keep on working and finally they finish the car, Joe is finally proud if his son and reunites with Bob and they become a family again. Bob has a sum of money to solve the rent and bill problem.

And with all the preparation mentioned above through out the whole blog page ;

This scene is the Ordinary Life of the plot :
